Former India legend lashes out at Indian selectors for dropping Ruturaj Gaikwad in Border Gavaskar Trophy

Ruturaj Gaikwad was initially expected to be included as a substitute opener.

The Indian selectors recently announced the squad for the upcoming five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Down Under. While three uncapped players were called up in Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana and Abhimanyu Easwaran, the exclusion of dynamic batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad raised eyebrows.

While Gaikwad was handed the captaincy of the India A team that will travel to Australia and play two first-class matches against Australia A and a three-day intra-squad game against the Indian senior team before the BGT, his name was a Amazing lady from India’s top list.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was initially expected to be included as a substitute opener for the main series after reports emerged that India captain Rohit Sharma was likely to miss the start of the BGT.

In the same vein, former Indian legend Krishnamachari Srikkanth expressed his disappointment over the decision.

Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube channel: “I don’t understand it at all. When they say Mayank Yadav bowled for few overs and now he is also not fit like Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag. Look, for Ruturaj, I don’t understand anything. Poor friend! What will he do? If he makes a century, then they can bring him back to the T20I team, right? He scored two first-class centuries but still didn’t get a chance. He got scores to back it up. Where should that guy go now?

Instead of Ruturaj, the Indian selectors opted to bring in Bengal batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran, who scored four centuries in his last four first-class games.
