While the Indian cricket team throughout history has always been a batting-dominated team, rarely has a captain had much choice when choosing his bowlers.

India, of late, have been blessed with multiple batsmen who can spin their arms and provide additional dynamics and flexibility to the team.

The current and future generation of cricketers have shown tremendous versatility and in this article we take a look at four such players who may be the best options to serve as a part-time bowling option.

Rinku Singh

Rinku Singh bowled his first over in the shortest format during the Sri Lanka T20I series in early July this year. Rinku managed to make an immediate impact by picking up two wickets in one and losing only 3 runs.

Earlier in December last year, Rinku Singh marked his ODI debut by picking his first international wicket against South Africa. Rinku dismissed Proteas batsman Rassie van der Dussen.

The 27-year-old has already testified to the dynamic value he brings to the team and could be a useful option for a skipper.

Riyan Parag

Riyan Parag boasts of a rich variety of variations. He found success in the T20I leg against Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets in the first T20I and then bowled an economical spell in the second to help India win the series.

Parag also has the ability to move the ball away from batsmen of both types with his variety of sliders and cutters. Not only that, Riyan’s defensive bowling can sometimes also help other players get on the wicket column.

However, Parag’s bowling prowess should come as no surprise. The 22-year-old has been a consistent player with the ball for Assam across all formats. In the last five years, he has claimed the most T20 wickets for the state (34), maintaining an impressive economy rate of 6.44 runs per over.

Until the arrival of the Impact Player rule in 2023, Parag was also a consistent part-time option for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Suryakumar Yadav

India’s latest T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav himself, is one more part-time option in the ranks. SKY, with his right arm bowling, showed that he could also make significant contributions with the ball and not just the bat, when he managed to defend six runs in the final against Sri Lanka in the bilateral series in July. August.

Surya leaked just five runs while picking up two wickets to secure the tie. Notably, this was SKY’s first time bowling in the shortest format.

The 34-year-old has already bowled a couple of overs for India in ODIs but is yet to pick up a wicket in the format.

Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma brings strong credentials as he bowled 134 overs in T20 matches with an economy rate of just over seven, and his best bowling figures were 3 for 7.

Furthermore, with the withdrawal of Virat and Rohit from T20Is, a void opened up at the top of the order which Abhishek Sharma would look to capitalize on. However, it is his bowling that can further support his cause if he can take on the role of the sixth bowler when required and deliver the goods.
