Indian national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir’s old comments about Sanju Samson have gone viral after the wicketkeeper-batsman was dropped from the Indian squad for the ODI series against the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Team India is all set to tour the island nation for the T20Is and ODIs.

On Thursday, July 18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads that will participate in the ODI and T20I series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The team received a few surprise call-ups and one of them was the absence of Sanju Samson from the 50-overs squad, which will be captained by Rohit Sharma.

This is a big surprise because Sanju Samson scored a stunning century in the last ODI he played. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored a match-winning ton against South Africa in their backyard and played an innings of 108 runs in 114 balls at Paarl, getting his team out of trouble.

Things have always been unfair for Sanju Samson as despite his good performances, he has never managed to be the opening batsman of the team. Due to his absence, many have blamed Gautam Gambhir for his omission from the ODI squad of the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.

However, with Gautam Gambhir under pressure over Sanju Samson’s omission from the team, some of his earlier comments about the wicketkeeper-batsman have gone viral. This has led to many lashing out at India’s new head coach for his hypocrisy.

In 2020, Gautam Gambhir announced that Sanju Samson would be India’s next young batsman. Taking to his Twitter account, he stated, “Sanju Samson is not only India’s best wicket-keeper batsman but also India’s best young batsman. Anyone up for a debate?”

After Sanju Samson scored a century against South Africa in Paarl, Gautam Gambhir said during an interaction on Star Sports that with the way the wicketkeeper-batsman has batted Big Ton, he will now have a consistent run. He said:

“But today, the way he scored big, I think hopefully he will have a consistent run from now on and we will get to see the best of Sanju Samson.”

If Sanju Samson does not continue playing for India, it will not be a loss for him, but for India – Gautam Gambhir

In the third major praise for Sanju Samson, Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on the batsman and stated that if MS Dhoni had hit sixes instead of Samson, people would have gone crazy, highlighting that the youngster should be given credit for what he does. He had stressed that the Rajasthan Royals captain should be backed just like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as he is set to become the number one batsman. He had said:

“I think the only XI where he doesn’t fit is India’s. Apart from that, I think he fits in every XI in the world, to be honest. Tell me if MS Dhoni had hit those kind of sixes, what would have happened? So that’s the problem. You have to give credit to the guys who have that exceptional talent. And you know what, if Sanju Samson doesn’t play for India anymore, it’s not his loss, it’s India’s loss. And I hope Sanju Samson gets the same backing as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“I think if we back him, we are losing a talent who is probably going to be the number one batsman in the world in the future. Unfortunately, we have not backed him so far and I think people sitting in those big rooms or probably in the selection committees, the selection rooms, should be scratching their heads wondering why Sanju Samson was not part of the T20 or probably part of the last World Cup. And in fact, I picked him as the number four batsman in the last World Cup as well,” he had said.
