Gautam Gambhir meets Virat Kohli for the first time after becoming India’s head coach

Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as the head coach of Team India has started on a good note. In his first assignment, Team India swept the just-concluded three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

India won the first game by 43 runs. After scoring a total of 213/7, the Men in Blue bowled out Sri Lanka for 170 runs to take the lead in the series. In the second game, India registered a 7-wicket win (DLS method) to clinch the series with one match remaining. After restricting Sri Lanka to 161/9, India chased down the revised total of 78 runs in less than 7 overs.

On Tuesday (July 30), India pulled off a miraculous win in the third T20I to complete a brilliant clean sweep. Asked to bat first, India finished their innings with a modest total of 137/9. At one stage, they were tottering at 48 for 5 and even the 100-run mark looked difficult at that point.

However, the visitors did well to score a total of over 130. In reply, Sri Lanka also finished on 137/8 before India won the Super Over.

With the T20I series over, Gautam Gambhir has joined the ODI squad. On Wednesday (July 31), he met the five players who were not part of the T20I squad but will play in the ODI series. The players are captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana and Shreyas Iyer.

While Gambhir and the rest of the T20I squad left India for Sri Lanka on July 22, the players who are only a part of the ODI squad arrived in Sri Lanka a couple of days ago. They were in Colombo while the T20I squad was in Pallekele. With the T20I series coming to an end on Tuesday, Gambhir joined the ODI squad in Colombo.

All three ODIs will be held in Colombo. The first match is scheduled for August 2. The upcoming series is India’s first ODI assignment of 2024 and they will be looking to put up a good show.
