Glenn Maxwell ‘thanks’ Indian star for reviving his IPL career

Maxwell had a tough time in the last few seasons with Punjab Kings.

While Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is one of the greatest match-winners of his generation, there have also been phases when the dynamic right-hander has not been able to perform at his best.

Such was the case for Maxwell in his final seasons with the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) before joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021.

Interestingly, Maxwell, in his new book titled ‘The Showman’, revealed that the credit goes to Indian star and former RCB captain Virat Kohli, who was the idea behind the move.

In an excerpt from his book, Maxwell reflected on his challenging 2020 season, during which he managed just 108 runs and did not score a single six. After that season, during the tour of Australia, Virat Kohli extended an invitation to him to join the Bengaluru-based franchise.

Maxwell wrote: “But I still felt there had to be a twist in this story, and there was. Who to thank? Virat Kohli. On that same tour of Australia, he wanted to whisper an idea to me: him, me and AB de Villiers to be the middle order at the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. I fell for this before he finished his sentence. Having started with Sachin and Ricky, the opportunity to bat with the equivalent of them in my own generation, on those golden pads no less, was irresistible.”
