“Hardik Pandya leaves captaincy” – Twitter reacts as RR’s Riyan Parag and Trent Boult hand MI their third consecutive defeat

The Wankhede stadium in Mumbai hosted the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) among the group led by Hardik Pandya Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) led by Sanju Samson on Monday, April 1.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the toss and as expected elected to bowl first in the match. They made a notable change to their bowling unit as an out-of-form Sandeep Sharma made way for Nandre Burger in the playing XI.

The decision to go for it with the ball proved excellent for the visiting team as star left-arm pacer Trent Boult made the Mumbai batsmen dance to his tune. Trent Boult dismissed Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir for golden ducks in the fifth and sixth balls of the first over of the innings.

MI were forced to bring in Dewald Brevis before the second over as an impact player. Nandre Burger came to bowl the second over and bowled some brilliant lines and lengths but couldn’t pick any wickets. Trent Boult then returned and dismissed Brevis for a golden duck in the third over, while Burger cleaned up Ishan Kishan for 16 in the fourth over.

MI captain Hardik Pandya had to come out to bat early and had a big responsibility on his shoulders. Pandya did not disappoint and decided to play a counter-attacking innings and took the RR bowlers to the cleaners. His partnership of 56 runs off 36 balls with Tilak Varma helped Mumbai Indians (MI) achieve a comeback in the game.

It was then that RR captain Sanju Samson introduced his best bowler Yuzvendra Chahal into the attack and the latter repaid his captain’s faith by sending Hardik Pandya back to the dugout for 34 runs in the 10th over.

After that, nothing went in MI’s favor as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were restricted to 125/9. The only two batsmen to score more than 20 runs for MI were Hardik Pandya (34) and Tilak Varma (32). For the visiting team, Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal got three wickets, while Nandre Burger and Avesh Khan shared three wickets between them.

During the chase, the Wankhede crowd was fully loaded and they were behind their team. Kwena Maphaka took Mumbai Indians to a flyer by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over himself.

Also, Jasprit Bumrah was given the new ball in the match but he couldn’t do much as Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson played cautiously against him. With other players failing to get wickets, Akash Madhwal finally made the breakthrough for his team by dismissing Sanju Samson in the fifth over. He followed up with the wickets of Jos Buttler and Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the end, Riyan Parag batted brilliantly and continued his excellent form to lead his team to an incredible 6-wicket victory. Parag smashed 54 runs off 39 balls, with 5 fours and 3 sixes, and helped Rajasthan Royals hand Mumbai Indians their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2024.
