‘He is one of the best players, but…’ – Mark Wood’s clear opinion on Virat Kohli’s unavailability

England pacer Mark Wood reacted as Indian batsman Virat Kohli missed the first two Tests of the five-match series between India and England. He said they look at all opposing hitters the same way they possess quality.

Just a few days away from the test series between India and England, the hosts received the big blow. Star batsman Virat Kohli pulled out of the first two games due to personal reasons and it shocked the fans of the Indian cricket team.

Almost everyone was excited to watch Virat Kohli against England as he would have been key for India in the Tests. The batsman has been the backbone of the team for over a decade and with youngsters in the middle order, his experience was necessary for the team.

But with Virat Kohli not there, it will be an opportunity for another batsman to step forward and stake his claim. Although Kohli’s absence will leave a big void, having the series at home, it can be a sign of relief for the team.

Mark Wood was asked if Virat Kohli’s absence would be an advantage for England. In response to this, he didn’t read much into it. He believes that all Indian batsmen are quality and whoever steps up will deliver. Speaking to reporters, he explained (quoted by Cricbuzz):

“We look [at] they exactly the same [way]. They are quality, throughout the batting lineup. He obviously he is one of the best players of all time. But if you look at the lineup, they have quality players. The next one who enters the scene will also be a quality player.”

Mark Wood further added that India, despite the absence of Virat Kohli, will have all their bases covered. He is aware that India dominates at home, but is ready to face the challenge. He added:

“As I mentioned before, we know the challenges here. India rarely loses at home. I think it’s almost like a free hit for us, we can come here and try something a little different. India in general has all its bases covered.”

This is another chance to do something historic – Mark Wood

Mark Word pointed out that England wrote Pakistan’s history and the upcoming series will be a chance for them to do something historic. He explained:

“Good bowlers, good spinners, top quality batsmen. But that’s the challenge…we recently made history in Pakistan…being the first team to win every match there. “This is another opportunity to do something historic and try to beat India on their own terms.”

Mark Wood would be one of the vital cogs in the wheel of India. In flat conditions, his raw pace could prove useful to the team. The fast bowler has done very well in the last few years for the team. A lot would depend on him as he steps forward for his team.
