Western Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright recently made headlines for his antics in the Sheffield Shield match. He retired mid-innings during the match against Tasmania at the WACA Ground in Perth.

Hilton Cartwright caught the attention of many when she walked out mid-inning after being notified of the unexpected birth of her second child. The incident occurred during the tea break on day 2 of the match, and the batsman rushed to the hospital to be by his wife’s side.

Hilton Cartwright left the stadium batting at 52. The right-hander seemed to be in complete control of the innings, but he had to hustle. However, after analyzing the situation and the birth of his son, he returned to the field playing for his team and made a valuable contribution.

While discussing his situation, Cartwright said his wife, Tameka, was 37 weeks pregnant and experiencing complications. He said he never expected the ongoing game to be affected by the birth of his son.

“My wife Tameka was only 37 weeks pregnant so this match against Tassie should never have been affected by the birth of our second child, which is why I chose to play.”

Hilton Cartwright said that as soon as she became aware of the situation, she had conversations with management and decided she needed to leave the ground in tea so she could return later. Speaking about the same, he explained:

“Tasmania was made aware of this situation during the innings break. Between myself, the coaches and (Western Australia captain) Sam (Whiteman), we had a plan around the time I needed to leave the ground at the tea break with the hope of returning to the crease later in the innings. . .”

Hilton Cartwright finished with an innings of 65 runs which helped Western Australia win the game by 6 wickets.

Cartwright then returned to the ground and there were doubts over whether Tasmania and the match referee would allow him to resume his innings. However, he was allowed to play when he came out to bat after the dismissal of teammate Cooper Connolly.

However, he couldn’t bat much in the second phase of his innings. His stay at the crease was interrupted by Riley Meredith. The right-hander finished with an innings of 65 runs. But his innings ensured that the team reached a total of 332 runs in the first innings and eventually won the game by 6 wickets. He played the vital innings of 39 unbeaten runs in an 83-run chase.
