The fifth Ashes 2023 Test played between England and Australia was the last of veteran English pacer Stuart Broad’s international career. Broad took a total of 604 wickets in the 167 Test matches he played and won many games for the Three Lions. However, Broad’s retirement from international cricket came as a surprise to his fans when it came in the middle of the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia in London.
While speaking to Sky Sports in a recent interview, Broad Stuart revealed that he could have played international cricket for two more years. However, Broad further stated that he wanted to finish on top and on top. England t-shirt for which he took the step.
Stuart Broad opens up about his international retirement
Stuart Broad told Sky Sports: “I feel inside me that I could have played a couple of more years, but I wanted to finish on a high, finish in the England shirt and be able to control it myself. I had to try and do it at the right time.”
“I haven’t regretted it yet, which I think tells me deep down that it was the right decision. Because my team-mates haven’t come onto the pitch wearing white and wearing the England cap, I haven’t had a moment where I’ve realized I’m never going to do that again.”
“All the players I’ve spoken to, from different eras, have had that ‘I’m not a professional cricketer anymore’ moment. Whether that will happen when England go to India or when Nottinghamshire take the field in April at Trent Bridge, I’m not sure. [but] “It couldn’t have ended in a better way.”
Stuart Broad had a legendary career in the English cricket team and witnessed many famous victories for the country. However, Broad was the bowler who took six sixes in an over from Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh during the 2007 T20 World Cup.
At this point, no bowler would have been able to recover from such an incident, but it was Broad who came out strong after the incident and turned out to be one of the greatest pacers in the history of international cricket.
Stuart Broad also had a brilliant partnership with his bowling partner James Anderson and took over 1000 Test wickets with him. However, Broad made his debut after Anderson, but Anderson continues to play while Stuart Broad retired.
Back in England, they will tour India in January 2024 and it will once again be a test for the English team to counter the Indian challenge and come out on top. However, it has not been a pleasant experience for England in the recent Test series in India.
