India captain Rohit Sharma spoke about the victory in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that before the match against South Africa, he could not sleep well because he was desperate to win the tournament.
India captain Rohit Sharma joined the likes of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as leaders who led the team to World Cup glory. Under his leadership, Team India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa in the final by 7 runs at the Kensington Oval and ending their title drought after 11 years.
Ever since Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy of the Indian team, he has done a fantastic job but what was missing from his cabinet was the ICC trophy. He lost the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 and the final of the 2023 ICC World Cup at home.
However, Rohit Sharma did not stop believing as he worked hard and led from the front in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He was sensational as a leader but had an even more brilliant performance with the bat. He was the team’s top scorer with 257 runs in 8 matches at a strike rate of 156.70. He also scored three fifties in the tournament.
After India won the final, Rohit Sharma was very emotional and burst into tears. He talked about his emotions and said flashbacks from 2007, 2011 and 2013 came to mind, but he knew that until he finished the job, nothing was finished. He said he was speechless, but once he got on the field, he knew what he had to do. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:
“It’s… It’s very hard to say right now how I feel. It’s been a while since this happened. But I remember 2007, 2011 and 2013. I remember everything. But until the job is done.” , you know this is not over. So today I was lost. It is very difficult to say what I felt, what it was, but this is the greatest happiness for me.
“Look, honestly speaking. When I woke up in the morning, I couldn’t sleep well all night. This is honest. This is an honest thing. And those things happen because you’re desperate for it. And you want it so bad. Then they can things like that happen, with which I very much agree. But I knew that once the match started, everything I had to do as a captain, as a player and as a batsman.”

Rohit Sharma admitted that he handled himself quite well on the field and ticked all the boxes. While he termed the World Cup win as a big deal, he said that he will be able to properly realise it once he gets it all down. He added:
“And I thought I handled myself well on the field. Whatever message was there, whatever we had to do with the guys on the team, we did it correctly. But obviously, it’s a big deal. It’s a big deal. So It will be very difficult for me to describe it right now, but if we talk about it tomorrow or the day after, I think I will be able to specify it correctly.”
Rohit Sharma also spoke about the family support he had and stated that his wife and daughter wanted to be a part of it. He added that for him, emotionally everything was under control. He added:
“Look, honestly, they’ve been manifesting this for a long, long time. That’s why they’re here. They wanted to be a part of this. No matter what, they want to be a part of it. And I love having them around. You know, you need a sense of calm when you’re playing such a high-profile tournament. They’re the ones that keep me happy, keep me nice and calm. So, emotionally, everything was under control.”
