Veteran South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis spoke about the possibility of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that everyone who plays wants to win the trophy and both legends of Indian cricket would like to do so.
The selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup 2024 is one of the major talking points in Indian cricket these days. The prospect of two stalwarts of Indian cricket playing in the World Cup seems very bleak as they have not appeared in T20Is since the last T20 World Cup.
Instead, a number of young people have been given opportunities and it is fair to say they have grabbed them with their hands. There has been a lot of speculation about whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play and even if they did play, wouldn’t it be unfair to the youngsters who have been playing for the last one year?
There were reports suggesting that Rohit Sharma will play in the T20 World Cup 2024 and will even captain the team. He categorically told the selectors to take decisions about his future and the BCCI wanted him to take charge.
On the other hand, there were other reports suggesting that Virat Kohli is not in the plans for the tournament. Reports added that the BCCI wants Ishan Kishan at No. 3 in the tournament and they will soon reach out to the senior batsman to discuss his future in the tournament.
In an interview with NDTV, the host asked Faf du Plessis if he sees Virat Kohli playing in the T20 World Cup 2024 as Rohit will reportedly lead the team. Responding to this, he stated that the tournament is not far away and he believes that the Indian great will be a part of the tournament. He explained:
“Yes, I think so. Certainly, if you look at the setup right now. The T20 World Cup is not far away. So it seems like everything is within reach. If you talk about the next 50-over World Cup, that’s where players will go ‘that’s too far’ and maybe that’s something I don’t see them playing like that.”

Faf du Plessis further stated that he knows Virat Kohli very well and the Indian batsman would not want to miss the opportunity to win the T20 World Cup 2024. He also said that Rohit Sharma would also be eager to play in the tournament. He added:
“But knowing Virat very well, he wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity of the T20 World Cup to get the trophy. That’s why we played, this time it was so close. “Rohit would be no different, I thought they were both excellent at home and would want to make sure they were prepared.”
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli did not play in the series against Australia and are also not part of the T20Is in South Africa. It remains to be seen when they will return in the T20 setup.
