ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Jasprit Bumrah ordered bed rest as BCCI blocks his return

The latest update on Jasprit Bumrah has raised serious concerns over his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He suffered back spasms after being bowled in Australia during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently under medical supervision after he was advised to rest at home. After a grueling Test tour of Australia, the Indian pacer returned home last week but his condition remains alarming due to swelling in his back.

Jasprit Bumrah under medical supervision, participation in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain

Sources revealed that Bumrah is expected to report to the Board of Control for Cricket at the Indian Center of Excellence (CoE) (BCCI) in Bengaluru. But there is no clarity on when he would visit the Center of Excellence (CoE), which puts his participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy in jeopardy.

However, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to visit the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru next week but that totally depends on his progress. Sources further revealed that medical experts have asked Bumrah to rest to allow the swelling to subside so that the next steps for his recovery and treatment can be determined.

For now, the focus is on ensuring the Indian runner’s back muscles fully recover and the swelling subsides before making further decisions about his fitness and future plans. However, if there is only swelling, then Bumrah could be available for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Jasprit Bumrah could attend Council of Europe next week: report

A source close to the development was quoted by Times of India: “Bumrah could go to the CoE next week, but for now there is no fixed date yet. You have been advised to take bed rest at home to help your muscles recover and swelling go down. Once this is done, the future course of action will be determined.”

As Bumrah is currently battling back swelling, Team India’s main pacer will not return to action. Given his history of back problems, the BCCI has been warned not to rush him back onto the cricket field.

The exact cause of the swelling is said to be still unclear, but if it is more severe than expected, his recovery could take longer and he could miss the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan and Dubai.

BCCI faces tough decision as Jasprit Bumrah battles swelling

The source added: “Bed rest doesn’t sound good. I hope it is not a disc bulge or muscle swelling that is of a higher degree. The approach has to be similar with him: wrap him in cotton and preserve talent like him.”

So now the management and selectors of the Indian cricket team are hoping that Jasprit Bumrah’s back problem is limited to swelling as a disc-related issue could further delay his return. With a packed schedule ahead, including Champions Trophy 2025, IPL 2025 and India’s tour of England, carefully and patiently managing the Indian pacer’s recovery is crucial.

India are yet to finalize their provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the national selectors are waiting for the medical team’s report before taking the call on Bumrah’s inclusion in the 15-member squad. They hope to have a clear picture in the coming days.
