Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has picked the leg-spinner in the team for the T20 World Cup 2024. He feels that Ravi Bishnoi should get the nod ahead of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as he is a good fielder.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is just around the corner. The tournament will be played in June in the United States of America (USA) and the Caribbean. The focus will be on the Indian team as they will be one of the favorites to win the tournament.
But before that, they have many questions to answer. One of the main questions will be who will be the team’s midfielder. The team has players like Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal along with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
But according to Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Bishnoi should be preferred first. He pointed out the batting prowess possessed by the leg-spinner in the order. In statements to Star Sports, he explained:
“Ravi Bishnoi for me because apart from bowling, he is a very good fielder. He is a better fielder than Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
“He also knows how to bat, the way he applied his brain and won the match for his team with his calm in the last IPL. I feel like he and Avesh Khan had won the match against RCB. So Ravi Bishnoi for me.”
Ravi Bishnoi has been impressive in the Indian T20Is. The leg-spinner has picked up 34 wickets with an economy of just over 7 and recently topped the rankings as well. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav shone with the ball in the T20Is in South Africa.
Both have been picked in the Indian team for the T20Is in Afghanistan. Yuzvendra Chahal, on the other hand, stayed away. But he will be under close observation during the IPL. It remains to be seen who will be part of the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Apart from Sunil Gavaskar, Irfan Pathan picks the fast bowlers.
Apart from Sunil Gavaskar, Irfan Pathan was also present during the discussion and was asked to choose between Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan. Responding to this, the former fast bowler claimed that the left-arm pacer was ahead of the other two bowlers. He stated:
“Arshdeep Singh is way ahead. He didn’t perform as well in T20 cricket as we expected, but he performed very well in ODI cricket on the tour of South Africa. It will be easy for him to carry that confidence into T20 cricket based on his abilities.”
Irfan Pathan further added that IPL will be important for people like Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan. He explained:
“The IPL will be extremely important but among these three, I think Arshdeep Singh is ahead at the moment. Mukesh and Avesh have the skills but being a left-arm spinner who can bowl with the new ball and yorkers with the old ball, Arshdeep brings different skills that are needed in a team.”
Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan have been named in the Indian squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan. It remains to be seen how they will perform in the three games.
