ICC World Cup 2023: Aakash Chopra Highlights Challenges If Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, And Shreyas Iyer Miss Asia Cup 2023

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra spoke about the selection of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming ODI World Cup on home soil later this year. Aakash Chopra believes that Indian team selectors will be faced with a dilemma if the trio misses out on the 2023 Asia Cup.

Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been out of action for a long time. As per recent developments, Bumrah started bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is expected to return during the T20I series against Ireland.

Bumrah is number 1 – Aakash Chopra

In a question and answer session on his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra He highlighted that Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are crucial players in India’s ODI setup.

“Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have not played cricket for a long time. The question is not whether or not they should be in the World Cup team.” Chopra said.

“If we talk about cue ball bowlers, Bumrah is number 1. In the absence of Rishabh Pant, Rahul is the perfect choice for the wicketkeeper-batsman. And if there is a shootout between Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas takes the lead in one-day cricket.” added.

It will be a 50-50 decision – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator stated that although it is not ideal to include players returning from injury, the length of the World Cup could make it easier for them to return.

“If none of them play in the Asian Cup, India has one series left, which will be against Australia at home. But only three ODIs are likely to be played there. It will be a 50-50 decision.” further stated.

“You don’t want to have undercooked players, that’s for sure. The good thing is that the tournament is very long. It is a 45-day event with nine league games. The tournament will take place in India, so acclimatization will not be a problem.” he continued.

The selection will become much more difficult – Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra stressed that the selection process will be more challenging if senior cricketers miss out on the Asian Cup, which will take place just before the World Cup.

“You can slowly take them to the World Cup. But ideally, the players who are not available for the Asian Cup, it will be a bit difficult to pick them. The selection will be much more difficult if these three players are not available for the Asian Cup.” He concluded.
