Ireland’s cricket team have been penalized for holding a slow overcharge against Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. The Andrew Balbarine-led were handed a 40% penalty after falling two overs short of their target.
Shaid Wadvalla, a member of the ICC International Panel of Match Officials, imposed the penalty on the Ireland team and skipper Andrew Balbirnie pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed penalty.

Field officials Gregory Brathwaite and Wayne Knights along with third official Langton Rusere and fourth official Aleem Dar leveled the charge.

The Ireland team was charged under Article 2.22, which relates to the minimum surcharge offences. According to this, “players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for each time their side does not bowl in the allotted time.”
