The ICC World Test Championship points table has witnessed changes in the standings twice in a span of two days. Rohit Sharma’s Indian team suffered an 8-wicket defeat in the first Test of the three-match Test series against the New Zealand national cricket team in Bengaluru on Sunday, October 20.
The Men in Blue failed to defend a modest target of 107 in the first innings of the match at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. They started the series on a disappointing note and conceded an early 1-0 lead to New Zealand. Notably, it was India’s second loss in a Test match at home this year.
Team India was bowled out for just 46 runs in the first innings
Captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first during the series. However, the decision did not pay off for the team as they were eliminated by a record total of 46 runs. Matt Henry picked up five wickets for just 15 runs, while William O’Rourke bagged four wickets for 22 runs.
In response, the Tom Latham-led team scored 402 and took a huge lead of 356 runs in the first innings. Rachin Ravindra was the leading run-getter for the Black Caps, scoring 134 runs off 157 balls with 13 fours and five sixes. Ravindra added a crucial 137-run partnership with Tim Southee for the eighth wicket.
The Rohit Sharma-led team avoided an innings defeat as they posted a total of 462 in their second outing. They looked to set a decent target for the Kiwis but lost their last seven wickets for just 54 runs. William O’Rourke played a crucial role in dismissing Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja.
