In-form Indian batsman will not be part of Champions Trophy 2025 squad, says former RCB star

He has an unreal average of 752 in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Enjoying the form of his life, Karun Nair has been making quite a noise with his performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). Nair, the only other Indian batsman apart from Sehwag to hit a triple ton in Tests, currently tops the run charts in VHT with 752 runs in seven innings at an unreal average of 752.

The 33-year-old’s recent form will undoubtedly make selectors think twice when deciding his squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, but a former Royal Challengers Bengaluru and India star predicted otherwise. Dinesh Karthik, who retired from cricket last year, opined that Karun Nair might have missed the bus for the ICC event, scheduled to begin on February 19.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said, “Yes, it is very tempting to bring Karun Nair into the setup and I think he has earned the right to be a part of the conversations.

“But I don’t think he will make the Champions Trophy team. But if it continues like this, why not? “A fit batsman like that, who plays fast and has good spin, is a armed player and I am very happy for him,” he added.

Karun Nair hopes to return to India

For the unversed, Karun was part of the Indian team in 2016-17 but eventually fell down the pecking order after some lackluster performances.

Meanwhile, Karun’s immediate focus will be to guide Vidarbha to a victory in the VHT final when they take on Karnataka in tomorrow’s (January 18) summit clash. His next best chance to break into the Indian team would be the Test series against England, scheduled for the end of June this year.

Karun Nair was also picked up by the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction last November and he will get another chance to show his mettle and further support his cause of returning to the national team.
