Indian team’s preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 begins tomorrow when they host Afghanistan for a 3-match T20I series at home. The selectors have included Sanju Samson in the team, something AB de Villiers is very happy to see as he has been a fan of Sanju for a long time.
Sanju Samson has found it difficult to become a permanent member of the Indian team, not only because of his inconsistent performances but also because other players of the same position perform better than him. He made his debut for India in 2015 through the T20 format before making his ODI debut 6 years later in 2021 against Sri Lanka.
There is no doubt about his class or technique but what happens is that the selectors have too many names to bet on and his own performances have not been concrete enough to become a starter. But regardless, Sanju Samson has a good chance of cementing himself in the squad for the upcoming 20-team ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
While most of the bases in India’s batting lineup have been covered, Sanju Samson could be a player who can provide versatility. He can bat as an opener, can slot in in the middle order and has also shown his finishing prowess from the 5th or 6th order.
Therefore, it is up to the Indian management led by Rahul Dravid how to handle Samson. During India’s recently concluded month-long tour of South Africa, Sanju scored his first ODI ton in the third match in Paarl. His knock was a classic Samson show and was also a sign of what was to come from his side if he was given consistent opportunities.
Former South Africa batsman AB of villiers had stated that he would enjoy his first tour to Rainbow Nation even before the ODI began.
“It’s great to see him on the team. He will enjoy the South African terrain. He stands tall when he bats. There is a bit of bounce and movement and all hitters will be tested. But I think someone like Sanju will do well. And he also gives you an option with the gloves.” – said De Villiers.
“It’s great to see him back in the team” – AB of villiers Talk about Sanju Samson
While talking about the T20I series between Afghanistan and India, AB de Villiers was especially delighted to see Sanju Samon back in the team, a player he considers an “incredible player”.
“I have been a big fan of Sanju Samson. I think he is a wonderful player. He has been an incredible performer for the Rajasthan Royals for many years. “It’s great to see him back in the team.” – concluded De Villiers.
Meanwhile, the first T20 will take place tomorrow in Mohali before the series heads to Indore and Bengaluru on January 14 and 17.
