Day 1 of IND vs ENG Dharamsala Proof It truly belonged to India. They defeated England for a paltry 218 and ended the day in a strong position at 135/1. They will resume Day 2 with a deficit of just 83 runs.

The Indian bowlers set up the game for the batsmen to follow. Kuldeep Yadav got his fourth fifer in Test cricket. He took 5/72 and Ravichandran Ashwin took 4/51 in his 100th Test match. Ravindra Jadeja took the key wicket from Joe Root.

All the wickets went to the spinners but both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj caused enough discomfort to the England batsmen with their opening burst on a decent Dharamshala track.

As always, England’s first matches added a stand of over 50 people. Ollie Pope’s wicket on the stroke of lunch opened the floodgates for England. Pope was dismissed in England’s 26th innings. England’s middle order barely contributed as the rest of England’s batsmen were bowled out in another 26 overs.

The inability of the English batsmen to handle pressure and their inability to play with top-class spin was evident. Joe Root and Ben Stokes, even with their experience playing in Indian conditions, had no answers for the Indian spin trio. Most of them failed to time the length and spin of the deliveries and especially struggled against Kuldeep.

After eliminating England cheaply, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal started positively. They added an opening stand of 104 runs and both batsmen achieved their respective benchmarks. Rohit crossed 1000 Tests as captain, while Jaiswal crossed 1000 Tests.

He now also has over 700 runs in the series and is only the second batsman after Sunil Gavaskar to score over 700 runs in a Test series. Gavaskar did it twice. The left-hander also surpassed Virat Kohli’s tally of 655 against England in 2016. Overall, it was a good day of Test cricket for the Indian team and the Indian fans at the scenic setting of the Dharamsala Stadium.

Now they will have to capitalize with the bat on Day 2 after finishing the day on top. England’s bowlers had their moments and finally it was Shoaib Bashir who broke through and stumped Jaiswal.
