India and Ireland had played only one match in the T20 World Cup against each other before the ongoing match. Ireland captain Paul Stirling had whistled for headers and match referee David Boon declared that he had made the correct decision. However, he quickly changed his decision and said that Rohit Sharma had won the toss.

Meanwhile, India opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Speaking after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma said: “We are going to bowl. The preparations have been good.
