Over a billion hearts were broken as the Indian cricket team lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia after a dominant and ruthless campaign. Team India had the best chance of winning their third ODI World Cup trophy, however, destiny wanted something more and India’s wait for an ICC title was not over.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament and picked up 24 wickets in seven innings. This included three five-wicket hauls and his best performance came against New Zealand in the first semi-final, where he took a seven-wicket haul and helped the team earn a place in the final.
Mohammed Shami also received praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the Indian dressing room after the CWC 2023 final loss against Australia.
Mohammed Shami was rested from the white-ball series against South Africa but was ruled out of the Test series due to injury.
Mohammed Shami’s top comment on CWC 2023 final loss
During a recent media interaction, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami shared details about the team’s environment after the CWC 2023 final loss and stated that the entire nation was disappointed after the Indian team lost the final. Shami added that the team tried its best to continue the momentum, but in the end could not explain what went wrong.
Mohammed Shami said (quoted by ANI): “The entire nation was disappointed (when India lost the World Cup). We tried 100 percent to continue the momentum we had created until the end and win the final. But… you can’t explain where we went wrong in the end…”
The Indian cricket team was ruthless throughout the ODI World Cup 2023 and won ten out of ten games before the final. They were just one win away from equaling Australia’s epic record for most wins during a single edition of the CWC, which they had achieved twice.
The ODI World Cup 2023 was also special in many ways as the Indian team did not depend on the performance of any player. In almost every match, different players won the Man of the Match award, which showed the dominance of the team.
Furthermore, the team had no problems batting or bowling first and won games even if they lost the toss. The most special match was the semi-final against New Zealand, when the Indian team scored 397 runs on the scoreboard and defeated the Kiwis thanks to a special spell from Mohammed Shami.
The World Cup was also very special for Indian batsman Virat Kohli as he completed his 50th ODI hundred and surpassed Indian legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli became the only batsman to reach 50 ODI tons and also one of the leading contenders to level Sachin’s record of reaching 100 hundreds in international cricket.
Virat Kohli was named Player of the Tournament for his fantastic batting display and was the highest run-scorer of the entire tournament. Kohli scored 765 runs in the entire tournament and scored runs at an average of 95.62.
