South Africa bounced back in style to win the second ODI. They defeated India for just 211 and chased down the target in 43 overs with Tony de Zorzi scoring his first ODI ton.
The second ODI defeat ended KL Rahul’s 10-match winning streak as India captain in the format. India were whitewashed by South Africa under the captaincy of KL Rahul in 2022 and this time they are set to win the series after taking it to the final.
The Indian batsmen were outclassed by the Proteas players. Sai Sudharshan was the top scorer with 62, followed by KL Rahul’s 52. None of the other batsmen in the Indian lineup scored more than 20 runs. Rinku Singh (17) was the third highest scorer in the Indian innings as his weakness against the moving ball was exposed once again.
As the Indian batsmen struggled, Zorzi and Reeza Hendricks (52) added 130 runs for the first wicket, thus setting the ideal platform for a short chase. The left-hander played with an attacking approach from the start and did not allow the Indian players to settle down. His unorthodox strokeplay was one of the most important features of him during his innings.
The lack of application on the part of the Indian batsmen was very evident in the way they lost their wickets. Rahul Saju Samson and Rinku Singh especially lost their wickets when they should have continued for the team’s cause.
The South African bowlers led by Nandre Burger were on point. The South African pacer, courtesy of his impressive performance, also bagged an IPL deal with Rajasthan Royals, who picked him up for 50 lakhs. Keshav Maharaj also got two wickets and played ahead of Tabraiz Shamsi.

With the bat, it was Zorzi who led the charge and Hendricks did the same with his efficient hitting game. It was a match in which everything fell into place for the locals while the visitors struggled to put up a fight. This was South Africa’s 51st victory over India in 93 ODIs.
Ahead of the decider in Paarl, the hosts would like to follow the same model of staying on point with both bat and ball. It is certain that the Indian batsmen need to bat much better to win the decider. A vital change in the Indian XI can be the inclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal in place of one of the pacers in the lineup.
