Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a bold statement after the loss against South Africa in the first Test at Centurion. He admitted there won’t always be happy days for the captain.
Rohit Sharma as captain did not have a great performance in the first test against South Africa in Centurion. The senior opener failed both as a batsman and as a pacer of the game and was one of the main reasons behind the big loss.
Rohit Sharma’s moves as a leader did not work as almost everything he touched backfired. The bowling changes he made did not work well and also with the bat he did not have a great outing.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma scored 5 runs in the first innings and then bagged a duck in the second innings. The other batsmen around him also did not bat well as they posted low totals in both the innings.
After the defeat in the first test against South Africa, Rohit Sharma was widely criticized for his leadership. Many have begun to criticize him and there are even calls to replace him as team captain.
But Rohit Sharma knows there won’t always be days in his favor. He added that on days like these he, as captain, needs to be with the team. He added that it is important for them to forget this defeat and focus on the next match in Cape Town. He explained:
“They will not always be happy days for the captain, but on days like this the captain needs to be with the team. “It is important to leave a loss like this here and not take it back to Cape Town.”
IND vs SA: Jasprit Bumrah didn’t get the support he wanted – Rohit Sharma
India gave away 408 runs with the ball and it was a poor outing for them. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, no other bowler gets going. The pacer picked four wickets while others gave away too many runs and couldn’t sustain the pressure he was putting on.
Rohit Sharma admitted that they gave away too many runs. He praised Jasprit Bumrah for his heroics with the ball and added that he did not get the support he wanted. He explained:
“This was not a 400-run wicket and we gave too many runs. We spray the ball everywhere, but it happens. You can’t depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah), the other three bowlers also needed to play their roles, we could learn from how South Africa played.
“Bumrah played well and we all know his quality. All he wanted was some support that he didn’t get. That happen. The three of them tried with all their might, bending their backs, but it didn’t happen the way we wanted. But games like these teach you a lot about what you want to do as a bowling unit.”
South Africa has taken a 1-0 lead in the series and now the second match will be played on January 3 in Cape Town. Rohit Sharma would hope to make a strong comeback both as bat and captain in the next game.
