Dean Elgar scored 4 and 12 runs in both innings of his last Test match and scored a total of 5347 runs in 86 Test matches with 23 half-centuries. His average throughout his Test career was 37.92. Elgar has also played eight ODI matches for South Africa. Elgar’s highest score in his Test career was 199 and he also led South Africa in Test cricket.
Apart from his brilliant Test career, Dean Elgar received a jersey signed by Indian batsman Virat Kohli and Indian captain Rohit Sharma also gifted him a jersey signed by all the players of the Indian cricket team. After Elgar got out in the second innings, the Indian team players congratulated him and the entire South African dressing room stood up and praised him for his wonderful Test career.
Coming back to the match, the Indian cricket team won the Cape Town Test by seven wickets and also achieved their first victory at the Sahara Park Newlands. India has been playing on this ground since 1993 and before the second Test, they had played a total of 6 matches.
The Indian team could not win a single match in the last 31 years on this field. India lost four games at Newlands and two ended in draws. However, the wait ended in 2024 and it was the Indian pacers who wrote the script to break South Africa’s stronghold.
Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah took 12 of South Africa’s 20 wickets in both innings and broke the backbone of the Proteas batting line-up. Siraj took a six-fer in the first innings, while Jasprit Bumrah followed him in the second innings.
India also tied the Test series 1-1 and also ended the tour of South Africa with a win. Rohit Sharma also became the second Indian captain to level a Test series in South Africa after MS Dhoni.
The Indian team also covered the huge loss it suffered in the 2023-25 World Test Championship qualification and regained its first place. The Indian team fell to sixth place after losing the first test, but will now aim to qualify for the WTC finals once again.
The Indian team is now scheduled to play Afghanistan in the three-match T20I series and will begin on January 11, 2024.
