IND vs USA: Revealed - Why India was awarded 5-run penalty vs USA?

The United States, on Wednesday (June 12), became the first team to be penalized five runs for failing to start a replay within the allotted time more than twice in a game.

The incident occurred after the 15th over when they were playing against India in the 25th match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. On a difficult pitch, India were in a fix as they needed 35 runs from the last five overs. From 11th to 15th over, India had managed to score just 29 runs and the pressure was firmly on them before they were awarded 5 runs which reduced the equation to running a ball.

The US was penalized by the referees for not starting the replay within a minute of the previous one ending for the third time in the game. Earlier in March this year, the ICC had mandated the use of timers between overs in both white-ball formats to address the issue of slow overs. The rule came into effect in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

According to the rule, the bowling team must start a new repetition within 60 seconds of completing the previous one. Failure of the bowling team to start the over within one minute of the conclusion of the previous over will attract two warnings before subsequent violations will attract 5 runs as a penalty.

India beat the United States to reach the Super 8:

Talking about the game, India beat the United States by seven wickets to book their place in the Super 8. Chasing 111, India crossed the finish line with nine balls remaining. The Men in Blue got off to a disastrous start as Virat Kohli (0) and Rohit Sharma (3) failed to get going.

Rishabh Pant started but couldn’t stay for long and was out for 18 before Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube stitched together an unbeaten stand to win the match. The duo shared an unbeaten 72-run stand for the fourth wicket to take India home.

India has become the first team from Group A to qualify for the next phase. The United States, on the other hand, are still in the fight for a spot in the Super 8. A win over Ireland in their final match would be enough for them to join India in the next round.
