Heavy hitter Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for his statement of unpreparedness following the team’s crushing 209-run defeat against Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final. He criticized the older players, saying they don’t want to travel early because they know they will be selected at all costs.
India suffered a massive 209-run defeat against Australia in the ICC WTC final. Their loss in the summit clash marked their ninth consecutive loss in ICC events, as they have failed to win the ICC Trophy since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.

The Indian team did not have the desired time to prepare for the Test Championship as the IPL concluded on May 31 and the game was held from June 7. After the loss, captain Rohit Sharma cited a lack of preparation as the reason behind the loss, saying that in an ideal world, a team would need 20 days of preparation.

However, this statement did not sit well with Sunil Gavaskar, who lashed out at the Indian boss, questioning what he meant by 20 days. He highlighted the real meaning of the preparation. While speaking to Indian Express, he explained:

“What kind of preparation are we talking about? Now they have gone to the West Indies. You have the example of the World Test Championship before you. Are you playing any game? So what is this talk about for 20-25 days? … When you talk about preparation, be genuine about it.
“Go 15 days before, play two preparation games. The main guys can rest, but the fringe players could be challenging those who aren’t doing well. He doesn’t get a chance to prove that he’s good enough.”

Sunil Gavaskar further blamed the senior players of the Indian team for the loss and said that they do not want to travel early and when they come early, they give the excuse of workload. He elaborated:
“The truth is that the principals do not want to leave early. Because they know that whatever happens, they will be selected. And when you go early they will talk about the workload. You call yourself the fittest team in the world or fitter than the first generations, so how do you collapse so soon? How do you have a workload problem when you play a game of more than 20?
India will now be seen in action when they take on the West Indies in the Test series, starting on July 12. The series will be the first for them in the new edition of the ICC World Test Championship.
