No surprise Shubman Gill took the No. 3 batting spot: Wasim Jaffer

Speaking at Jio Cinema, former India batsman Wasim Yaffer revealed the possible reasons why Shubman Gill chose the number 3 batting position in the IND vs WI Test series. According to Jaffer, Gill played either the #3 or #4 position at the Under-19 World Cup.

“He is a good player. A player like him can play from No. 1 to No. 5. Shubman Gill has a game like that. I would have thought of something before doing that. I remember he was also playing No. 3 or No. 4 in the U-19 World Cup. However, we have always seen him open,” said the Ranji Trophy legend.

Wasim Jaffer is also not surprised by Gill’s decision to take the number 3 spot in the series. Jaffer said that openers like to bat a bit lower after fielding 150 overs in Test matches. He also feels that understanding the pitch may be another reason that triggered Gill’s decision.

“I’m not surprised by his decision to pick No. 3. Us openers sometimes had a problem when playing 150 overs and we had to go and face the new ball in 10 minutes. So No. 3 gives you a small mattress. You get to see the bowling and the pitch. Maybe that could be one of the reasons,” Jaffer further said.

Shubman Gill was chosen as the Test starter during the India vs Australia Test series in February-March this year. After KL Rahul failed to score runs in the first two games against Australia, Shubman Gill started the innings in the next two games. The 23-year-old also smashed a ton in one game.
