Former Australian batsman Adam Gilchrist has backed minnows Nepal and Netherlands to cause big upsets in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Adam Gilchrist, who was part of the Australian team in the inaugural edition of the World T20 in 2007, made this statement in light of the recent upsets in ICC events. The terms “Disgusts” have nothing to do with any player or team being sad. It’s actually a term coined a couple of years ago that denotes that a small team has defeated a large, powerful team.
Surprises in the world of sports have become very frequent and in Cricket they have also left their mark. During the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, we saw quite a few upsets as Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan and the Netherlands defeated South Africa. Last year at the 50-over World Cup, Afghanistan eclipsed the cricket world with victories against England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
In the upcoming 20-team T20 World Cup, there will be no shortage of small nations trying to beat the big boys like Australia, India and England, among others.
Adam Gilchrist trusts Nepal and Holland to surprise with shocking victories
During a recent appearance on SEN Radio, Australia, Adam Gilchrist was asked to shed light on the teams he believes can cause big upsets. Gilchrist did not think much before naming Asian team Nepal and the fourth European T20 World Cup team Netherlands.
The former batsman believes that Nepal has what it takes to fire against a big team. Adam Gilchrist believes that players like Dipendra Singh Airee, Kushal Bhurtel, Rohit Paudel, Kushal Malla and Karan KC, who are part of the team, can use their experience in this World Cup.
“I think Nepal would be a team that could shoot. They have a couple of young players who have been in all the big leagues for several years.” – said Adam Gilchrist via SEN Radio.
In what will be only their second appearance in the T20 World Cup, the Nepalese team will try to go as far as possible.
Gilchrist names Holland as another team that can cause a surprise
Adam Gilchrist named the Netherlands as the second country capable of beating the big boys. He mentioned their victory against the South Africans in Adelaide during the 2022 World T20 in Land Down Under. The Dutch, in fact, have a chance to beat them again, as they are drawn in the same group as the Proteas.
The Netherlands had denied South Africa qualification for the next round of the World Cup after beating them by 13 runs in their final group match.
“The Dutch always seem to get irritated, they always seem to get under the skin and again they are in the same group as South Africa. They did it in the T20 World Cup last time in Australia in Adelaide. So, it could be the Dutch.” – concluded Adam Gilchrist.
