India team selection meeting for Sri Lanka tour postponed; squad to be announced later today

The selection meeting to pick India’s squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka has been postponed for at least a day more.

The meeting was scheduled for Wednesday (July 17). However, it has been postponed for the time being. According to Amol Karhadkar of The Hindu, the meeting is likely to be rescheduled for Thursday. The BCCI is also expected to announce the teams on the same day.

While the selection meeting did not take place on Wednesday, there was an introductory meeting which included new head coach Gautam Gambhir, members of the selection committee and BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The meeting was called by Shah, according to Cricbuzz.

The meeting was held online and lasted for over an hour. During the meeting, Gambhir gave his input to the selectors on the kinds of players he wanted in the team. The report also stated that Rohit Sharma might be available for the ODI series despite recent reports stating that the captain would be rested for the series.

Since India will only play a few ODIs before next year’s Champions Trophy, Rohit could be available for the series. In case the veteran batsman decides not to, KL Rahul is likely to lead the team in Sri Lanka.

As far as the T20I squad is concerned, the selectors could spring a big surprise. While Hardik Pandya is expected to replace Rohit as the permanent T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly emerged as a strong contender.

Pandya was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup last month and also performed well, but his fitness issues could force the selectors to name Suryakumar as the new T20I captain.

India to Sri Lanka Tour 2024:

Meanwhile, Team India is scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20Is against Sri Lanka. The tour will begin later this month. The Indian team will leave for Sri Lanka on July 22. The T20I series will begin on July 27.

All matches are scheduled to be held at Pallekele. On the other hand, the ODIs will begin on August 2. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to be held in Colombo.
