The pitch curator at the Green Park in Kanpur made a massive statement after play on Day 3 of the India vs Bangladesh second Test was cancelled. He said they had everything under control but the referees didn’t tell them what the problem was.
The ongoing second Test between India and Bangladesh has been marred by rain. The rain gods were not kind on the first three two days as almost two sessions of Day 1 along with the entire Day 2 were washed away and only 35 overs of the game have been possible so far.
It didn’t rain on day 3 and we were expected to have some play. However, that was not the case. Although there was no cover on the field, the umpires inspected the field three times and were not convinced.
Soggy patches on the pitch, particularly in the deep mid-wicket area near Pavilion C, were the main problem. Additionally, the wet 30-yard circle also remained a concern. Match referee Jeff Crowe, along with substitute referee Virender Sharma and television referee Rod Tucker ultimately decided to call it a day.
Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) pitch curator Shiv Kumar said the match umpires gave them three different times for inspection on Day 3 of the India vs Bangladesh second Test, but did not tell them which area. It was wet. He revealed that he even insisted that they start the game. Speaking to IANS, he explained:
“They gave us three different times for the inspection but they never told us what the problem is. What area was wet or what is the problem? I told them they can start the game, but if they have any concerns, let me know.”
The ground official says the match officials told them to wait for natural light during day 3 of the India vs Bangladesh Test.
Before the third inspection on Day 3 of the India vs Bangladesh second Test at 2 pm, a ground official said the match officials told them to wait for natural light to appear. But he mentioned that they did not say about the exact area of the wet spot. He told IANS:
“The match referees have asked us to wait for natural light and only then can we continue the game. The field and other parts of the field are perfectly fine, there are certain areas of concern but we can start playing.”
He further said: “If they want to wait for sunlight, then they should have set the next inspection time at 1:00 pm because there is always a little bit of sunlight that will dry out the area in question within an hour. “We have already lost two sessions, the next inspection at 2 p.m. will lead us to suspend the game.”
After almost three days of ravaging, the BCCI has come under serious criticism for the poor drainage system in Kanpur. Since the forecast has not been good for the last two days, it remains to be seen what the future of the Test match between India and Bangladesh will be, especially with the WTC points at stake.
