India’s semi-final hopes sink after Pakistan drop eight catches in Women’s T20 World Cup match against New Zealand

New Zealand’s victory meant that both India and Pakistan were eliminated from the competition.

As if India’s performance has been poor in this tournament, Pakistan went down a notch with their on-field efforts in a must-win match against New Zealand tonight. They lost as many as eight catches in the first innings in one of the most horrendous fielding spectacles in history.

The falls started from the second delivery of the fifth over when Muneeba Ali couldn’t get a good chance off Nida Dar’s bowling. He should have taken it when it was a tough opportunity, especially when the wicket was as big as Suzie Bates.

Pakistan then lost catches on the second delivery of the sixth over, the third delivery of the eighth over and the fifth ball of the 16th set. While they caught a few in between, the procession of catch releases did not stop at all.

Pakistan missed four more chances in the second ball of the 18th over and then lost as many as three catches in the final set – in the first delivery, the third and the fifth. That took the tally to eight, with Nida Dar’s bowling alone seeing five catches falling to his spell.

India and Pakistan eliminated from the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup

New Zealand recorded a 54-run win in their final league match to seal their place in the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. This victory meant that both India and Pakistan were eliminated from the competition.

Batting first, New Zealand could only score 110/6, with Suzie Bates (28) and Brooke Halliday (22) contributing useful runs. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu got three wickets, while three other players got one wicket each.

During the chase, Pakistan had to chase it down in 10.3 overs to qualify for the next round and have a go. However, they kept losing wickets in the process and the batsmen could not form partnerships at any stage.

Pakistan were therefore left for just 56 in 11.4 overs, with only Fatima Sana (21) and Muneeba Ali (15) reaching double figures. Consequently, they fell short by 54 runs and were eliminated from the tournament with India.
