IPL 2024: "Ask MS Dhoni..." - Ravichandran Ashwin on his return to CSK

Ravichandran Ashwin, who plays for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, was recently asked by a fan on Instagram if he would play for the Chennai Super Kings in the future. Ashwin played for Chennai Super Kings before the franchise suffered a two-year ban in 2016 and 2017.

Ashwin was not signed by CSK in the 2018 mega auctions and was bought by Punjab Kings that season. Ravichandran Ashwin then joined Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2020 season and played two seasons for them before joining Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 season.

Ravichandran Ashwin reacted cheekily to a fan who asked him if he would play for Chennai Super Kings again in the IPL. The player replied cheekily and said that he should ask the question to CSK captain MS Dhoni. The answer came when the 37-year-old shared a photo of himself at the Madras Cricket Club, where he began his journey as a professional cricketer.

The Instagram post shared by R Ashwin had the caption: “Where I come from.” One user responded to the post: “When will we see you in yellow?” Ashwin replied, “You should ask Annan (elder brother) Dhoni only.” MS Dhoni will be playing his 17th season in IPL 2024 and is the league’s most capped player with 250 appearances.

Ravichandran Ashwin played for the Chennai-based franchise from 2008 to 2015. In his eight seasons at CSK, he took 90 wickets in 97 games at an economy rate of just 6.46. His performance for the Chennai Super Kings helped him earn a place in the Indian team, where he proved his worth. He represented India in the World Cup-winning campaign of 2011. Ashwin also bowled the famous last-rounder against England in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy Finals.

Ravichandran Ashwin recently praised MS Dhoni tagging him as a successful film director, taking Suresh Raina as an example. He said on his YouTube channel: “Dhoni is not a captain. He is a director. Actually, he is a very, very good film director, as if he were the director of the game. What does a film director do? “He chooses characters and he chooses the exact casting for that character.”

“So, I think Dhoni, in his head, picks a character, knows where he fits in, who is the right person for that character and gives that person the exact situation to play his role to the fullest. That’s what I think he did with Suresh Raina (in the 2011 ODI World Cup),” Ashwin added.

Ravichandran Ashwin will be in action for Team India in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting on January 25. The first Test of the series will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ashwin is just 10 wickets away from achieving the personal milestone of taking 500 Test wickets in his career. He will be the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to achieve this unique feat.
