Rajasthan Royals, on Saturday (April 13), defeated Kings of Punjab by three wickets in a thrilling game to get back to winning ways in IPL 2024. Setting a target of 148, RR crossed the finish line with one ball remaining.
RR got off to a good start with Yashasvi Jaiswal and new opening partner Tanush Kotian adding 56 runs for the first wicket. Liam Livingstone broke the stand by dismissing Kotian for 24. Jaiswal and Sanju Samson then added 26 runs for the second wicket before both departed in quick succession.
Kagiso Rabada dismissed them both to leave RR reeling at 89 for 3. Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel steadied the ship with a 24-run stand before also departing in quick succession. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Parag while Harshal Patel dismissed Jurel to reduce RR to 115 for 5 from 113 for 3.
A 21-run tussle between Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell followed. With both batsmen going well, it looked like they would take RR home easily. However, Sam Curran dismissed Powell and Keshav Maharaj in the 19th minute to turn the game around. In the final over, RR needed 10 runs and Hetmyer made no mistake in leading his team home.
Earlier in the game, RR managed to restrict PBKS to 147/8 in 20 overs after opting to bowl first. With captain Shikhar Dhawan unavailable due to a problem, Jonny Bairstow opened the innings with Atharva Taide.
They added 27 runs for the first wicket before Avesh Khan dismissed Taide for 15. 14 runs later, Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Prabhsimran Singh for 10. From there, PBKS continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and soon found themselves reeling at 70. out of 5.
Jitesh Sharma and Liam Livingstone brought much-needed stability to the innings and stopped the rot with a 33-run stand. Avesh Khan broke the stand by dismissing Jitesh for 29. Livingstone also started but couldn’t stay till the end when Sanju Samson overtook him.
He England The star left after scoring 21 off 14 balls. Ashutosh Sharma once again came up with an excellent cameo to take PBKS close to the 150-run mark. The right-handed batsman smashed 31 runs off 16 balls with the help of fours and three sixes. For RR, Avesh Khan and Keshav Maharaj got two wickets each.
