Rashid Khan was the hero, scoring four off the last ball as Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by three wickets to return to winning ways. The defeat ended RR’s winning streak in IPL 2024.
Chasing 197, GT started well with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan adding 64 runs for the first wicket. However, they soon found themselves on the back foot after Kuldeep Sen dismissed Sudharsan (35), Matthew Wade (4) and Abhinav Manohar (1) in his first two overs to reduce them to 79 for 3.
It was followed by a 32-run stand between Gill and Vijay Shankar before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed the latter for 16 in the 14th over. In his next over, Chahal put RR firmly in command by dismissing Gill for 72 and leaving GT reeling at 133 for 5.
In the last two overs, GT needed 35 runs and Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan got 20 runs in the 19th over bowled by Kuldeep to keep their team in the contest. The equation finally came down to two runs from the last ball and Rashid hit Avesh Khan for a four to seal a dramatic victory for his team.
Earlier, RR scored 196/3 in 20 overs after GT won the toss and opted to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s poor run in IPL 2024 continued when Umesh Yadav dismissed him for 24 in the fifth over. In the sixth over, Rashid Khan returned Jos Buttler for 8 to leave RR reeling at 42 for 2.
GT, however, could not capitalize on the gains and could not take a wicket until the 19th over. Captain Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag took RR to a strong position by sharing a 130-run stand for the third wicket. Mohit Sharma broke the stands in the 19th minute by dismissing Parag. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 76 runs off 48 balls with the help of three fours and five sixes.
Samson and Shimron Hetmyer then took the score to close to 200 runs. Samson remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 38 balls, while Hetmyer scored 13 for 5. For GT, Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers, taking 1 for 18 in his four overs.
