Piyush Chawla, the 35-year-old Indian national cricket team player, made a revelation about ignoring young batsman Prithvi Shaw’s demand for retirement and confirmed that he would definitely retire after MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, he continues to play for Chennai Super Kings and is speculated to take part in IPL 2025 as well.

On the other hand, Chawla last played Test cricket for India in 2012, while his last ODI and T20I appearances were in 2011 and 2012 respectively. He has not officially announced his retirement from professional cricket and continues to play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

He has done a remarkable job for the 5-time champions in the premier T20 league and is likely to make a comeback in the upcoming edition as well. Piyush Chawla has a unique record of sharing a dressing room with the only father-son duo to have played in the Indian Premier League – Sachin Tendulkar and Arjun Tendulkar.

Chawla made his India debut in 2006 and shared a dressing room with Sachin, and after many years, he shared a dressing room with Arjun in the IPL 2023.

Meanwhile, in a recent interaction on a podcast, Chawla was asked who would retire first between him and Dhoni, to which he replied that the CSK great would. He also shared a funny incident where he told Prithvi Shaw that he had played with his son before retiring.

“Mahi bhai. Some time ago, Prithvi Shaw told me ‘Bas karo yaar ab PC bhai’. I told him that I had played with Sachin paaji and now I was playing with his son. I was playing with you and after playing with your son, I will retire,” the veteran Indian bowler said on The Shubhankar Mishra show.

It is noteworthy that legendary CSK captain MS Dhoni has not made any confirmation on his future in the IPL but has said that he will take a decision once the BCCI announces the retention rules.

When people asked me, “Why Piyush Chawla and this, that?” I said, “Okay, let them talk.” Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla also stressed the importance of having an experienced campaigner in the team and said he decided to silence his critics with his performances after questions were raised about his age during his stint with Mumbai Indians.

“With all due respect to everyone, MI had some good bowlers, but at some point, experience matters. If a pressure situation arises, an experienced player will not be able to handle it the same way a young player can. When we were 20 or 21, we used to bowl to escape punishment; now, we bowl to get wickets.

“When people asked me, ‘Why Piyush Chawla and this, that?’, I told them it was okay, let them talk. Then the same people started messaging me, posting on social media things like ‘The PC is back, PC 2.0’,” he added.

Chawla has picked up a total of 192 wickets in IPL while playing for 4 teams, and in the recent edition, he picked up 13 wickets for Mumbai Indians.
