Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan has given a massive update on MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He said they would have a conversation with the keeper-batsman about his retention under the uncapped player rule.
The BCCI released the retention policy ahead of the IPL 2025 auction a few days before. Among all the rules and regulations released by the government, point number 7 was most likely reintroduced so that MS Dhoni could play another edition.
As per the rule: “An internationally capped Indian player shall become uncapped if in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant season takes place, he did not play in the starting eleven in International Cricket (Test match, ODI , Twenty20) or does not have a central contract with BCCI. This will apply only to Indian players.
The rule was there till 2021, but after that, the BCCI suspended it. With his reintroduction now, it means that Chennai Super Kings can retain MS Dhoni in the uncapped section as his last international assignment was in 2019 and he announced his retirement in 2020.
Recently, the wicketkeeper-batsman also made a statement that he will decide his future after the retention policy comes, and he does not want the team’s future to be affected because of him. This will also allow Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni for a very low price of INR 12 crore for the three seasons combined.
Now that the no-cap rule is in place, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was asked whether they would use the rule for Dhoni or not. He mentioned that they are not sure of anything as of now, as they have not yet had conversations with the wicketkeeper-batsman. Speaking to the Times of India, he said:
“We are not sure at the moment. We may not even use it for MS Dhoni. It is still too early to comment on this because we have not had talks with him. Dhoni was in the US and we have not had talks yet” . “.
We are hopeful that he will play, but it is a decision that MS Dhoni himself will take – CSK CEO
Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi added that they will hold talks with Dhoni next week. He said that they want the wicketkeeper-batsman to play in the next edition, but it will be his decision. He elaborated:
“Now I will be traveling this week so there is a possibility that there will be some discussions next week. Then there could be some clarity. We are hopeful that he will play but it is a decision that Dhoni will take personally.”
Dhoni was battling a knee problem during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He was unable to bat due to the injury and hence only batted in the last few overs, playing fiery cameos. He added 161 runs in 14 matches and scored runs at a strike rate of 220.25.
