Delhi Capitals (DC) seem to have finally found clarity when it comes to KL Rahul’s role ahead of IPL 2026, and it could be the reset that both the player and the franchise needed.
KL Rahul prepares for new role in IPL 2026
After a season full of experimentation and changing responsibilities, the think tank has reportedly decided to go back to the basics: Rahul will open the innings and take over groundskeeping duties.
It is a measure that seems logical and backward. Rahul has enjoyed his most successful seasons in the IPL as an opener, where he has consistently made runs with pace and consistency. By giving him a regular role at the top, DC looks to bring much-needed stability to a batting order that looked shaky at times last year.
In IPL 2025, Rahul’s role was anything but fixed. After being signed for a hefty amount of Rs 14 million, he was often pushed into the middle order, batting at number 4 in several matches. While he managed to emerge as DC’s leading run-scorer – with 539 runs in 13 matches at an average of close to 54 and a strike rate of 149.72 – the constant change did not allow him to establish a rhythm.
The turning point came at the end of the season. As the team struggled to find reliable openers, Rahul came back to the top and the impact was immediate. His unbeaten 112 off 65 balls against the Gujarat Titans was a reminder of what he can do when given clarity and responsibility, even if the team couldn’t cross the line that day.
With IPL 2026 approaching, the Delhi Capitals seem determined not to repeat the same mistake. Apart from opening the batting, Rahul is also expected to keep wickets, a role he already plays for India in ODIs. This dual responsibility could make him even more central to the team’s plans, both tactically and as an important figure in the lineup.
DC eyes bigger targets in IPL 2026
The decision to block Rahul’s role also comes against the backdrop of growing discussions over how he was used last season. Former Indian cricketers have openly noted that the uncertainty surrounding his batting position may have held him and the team back.
Subramaniam Badrinath did not mince words while addressing the issue. “Every year, the batting order is their conundrum, especially where KL Rahul should bat. I think KL Rahul wants to open the innings. But on the other hand, the team management wants him to bat in the middle order,” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel. “This seems to be an ongoing conflict. They definitely have to resolve this issue. It is not clear if KL Rahul is happy in DC.”
His comments reflect a broader sentiment: that clarity in roles is essential, especially for a player of Rahul’s caliber. Constant adjustments can throw off the pace and, in a format as fast-paced as T20 cricket, that can make all the difference.

Echoing similar thoughts, Mohammad Kaif strongly backed Rahul sticking to his opening duties. “I think he will open, and he should open on his own. He has a fabulous record as an opener. If we talk about the last three-four years, his graph, in terms of strike rate, has gone up a lot. I feel they should not be confused,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
With Rahul now at the top, Delhi’s batting line-up suddenly looks more balanced. The middle-order has enough firepower with players like David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Nitish Rana, allowing Rahul the freedom to anchor or accelerate depending on the situation.
Beyond the franchise, this season could also be crucial for Rahul personally. Having been out of India’s T20I setup since the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2026 presents a golden opportunity to make a strong case for a comeback. A consistent performance as an opener (where he is most comfortable) could firmly return him to the national team.
The Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 1 and all eyes will be on how this newfound clarity translates on the field.
