IPL franchises left confused by new player retention rules; awaits clarification from BCCI

The ten IPL franchises are now confused over the revamped criteria and have demanded clarification from the BCCI on the player retention policies for the upcoming IPL season.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the retention rules ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction.

However, the ten IPL franchises are now confused over the revamped criteria and have demanded clarification from the BCCI on the player retention policies for the upcoming IPL season.

Franchises must submit their lists of retained players by the Oct. 31 deadline. They have reportedly approached the BCCI regarding retention, player salaries, match fees, performance bonuses and other matters for the next three-year cycle.

As pointed out by TOI, IPL franchises remain unsure about the new regulations regarding Withholding and Right to Match (RTM). Under the revised rules, franchises can retain up to six players, including one uncapped player, with a maximum of two uncapped players allowed.

IPL franchise official questions new player retention rules

The holding prices have been set at 18 million rupees for player 1, 14 million rupees for player 2, 11 million rupees for player 3, 18 million rupees for player 4 and 14 million rupees for the player 5. The value for an uncapped player is INR 4 crores.

As per the new rule, if the total retention amount is less than INR 75 crore, only that amount will be deducted, but in case the amount exceeds, the additional amount will be removed from the salary cap.

An unknown official of an IPL franchise has expressed concern regarding the rule and questioned its validity. He also asked about financial allocations for retained players if franchises are given more autonomy in their operations.

“What are they trying to say here? It has also left us confused. Does this mean that any price can be followed to retain players? Are you saying that player 1 and player 2 can be retained for 18 million rupees each? And if the total price of deductions exceeds Rs 75 million, it will be deducted from the salary cap. If the franchises have free rein to use their own prices for the different withholdings, what are markers 18, 14 and 11 for?” questioned the senior official.
