India suffered a poor 79-run defeat against Australia in the final of the ICC U19 World Cup 2024. It was not a fairytale ending for Uday Saharan’s team as after a dominant run in the tournament, they faced a loss in the final, which was their first loss in the tournament.
India U19 played a dominant style of cricket throughout the league stage and reached the semi-final undefeated. They were under pressure in the semi-final against South Africa, but held their nerve and found a way to get through the final against Australia.
In the final they had a great start to the game with the ball. Based on the efforts of Raj Limbani, who picked three wickets with the ball, they restricted Australia to a total of 253 runs. It seemed that with the bat they were going to pave the way to an easy victory.
But this was not the case as the Indian batsmen fell and could not get ahead at all. Adarsh Singh at the top played an innings of 47 runs and was the team’s leading run-getter. This speaks to the kind of performance the boys in blue showed with the bat in the tournament final.
The Australian bowlers continued to contribute wickets at regular intervals and put pressure on India. The Uday Saharan-led team reeled at 128/8 and the game was done and dusted before the 50 overs were bowled in the second innings of the game.
Murugan Abhishek and Naman Tiwari kept fighting hard till the end and added 46 runs together. They revived the fans’ hopes and brought the team closer to the goal. But he couldn’t take the team beyond the finish line. The Indian team conceded 174 runs and lost the game by 79 runs.
Since the last few months, Australia has been troubling India a lot, be it in men’s, women’s or under-19 cricket. The Men in Yellow have defeated Team India in the final of every ICC event since the last one year.
