Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has revealed whether they would do the team’s post-mortem after an embarrassing test series loss against the New Zealand national cricket team at home.
India lost the second Test against the Black Caps by 113 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. With the second Test defeat, they also lost the Test series at home with one match still remaining.
New Zealand upset India in first two Test matches
New Zealand entered the Test series against India after a humiliating series loss against Sri Lanka. India were the clear favorites for the Test series but the underdogs shocked Rohit Sharma & Co. and broke the fort.
Notably, India were on a dominant 18-series winning streak in home Tests and the Kiwis ended it with their first Test series win in India. Furthermore, it was after more than a decade that India lost a home test series as their previous loss in a home series was against England in the 2012-13 season.
Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir were criticized after the defeat and harshly criticized by fans and pundits. India has already faced 4 defeats in Test cricket at home under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, which is the second most for an Indian captain.
I don’t want to do any autopsy – Rohit Sharma
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Indian national cricket team captain Rohit highlighted India’s dominant run at home and added that he will not pay too much attention to the recent defeat at the hands of the Kiwis.
“It has happened in the last two Test matches, we have won 18 consecutive home series which means we have done a lot of things right. We have had exceptional performance in recent years. Hence, I am not going to go into it too much and we have screwed up a lot.
“I think in 2-3 innings we have underperformed with the bat, but it happens that when you perform consistently for so long, you suffer a defeat,” Rohit said in the post-match press conference.
Rohit Sharma added that he will not do the autopsy of the team because he does not doubt the potential of the players present in the squad.
“I don’t want to doubt anyone’s potential. These guys have helped us stay undefeated at home for so long and therefore I don’t want to do any post-mortem. But we can see what we can do to get out of such situations and the batsmen must come out with confidence in their plan. “The New Zealand batsmen also showed that if you put pressure on the players, things will happen in your favour,” he added.
I thought it was a release where not much happened – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was also asked if the New Zealand batsmen were allowed to put too many runs on the board in the first innings (259). Responding to this, the Indian captain said that they managed to limit the Black Caps to a decent score and it was only the failure of the Indian batsmen that cost them the match.
“Look, to be honest, when they started, they were 200-something for three, and for us to come back and restrict them to 259, it was great. I thought it was a pitch where not a lot was happening, we just didn’t bat well enough. If we If we had gotten closer to the first innings, things would have been different, but New Zealand played better.”
Rohit Sharma also sent a message to his teammates to buck up and prepare for a better performance in the final Test match at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. He said:
“We want to show up at Wankhede and win that test. Without thinking too much about the future. It is important that we focus on our next game and the best we can do as a unit, because it is a collective failure.”
