Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has said he will not resign as he faces criticism after Pakistan’s humiliating defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series.

It was Pakistan’s first ever loss against Bangladesh in the longest format of the game. Before the loss, Pakistan had won 12 of the 13 Test matches it had played against the Bangladesh Tigers, while one match had ended in a draw.

However, their past performances and reputation were forgotten as Bangladesh stunned their favourite hosts and claimed a historic victory.

The home team performed well in the first innings as they declared their innings at 448/6. In reply, Bangladesh finished their innings with 565 runs and took a lead of 117 runs.

The match looked destined to end in a draw as Bangladesh finished late on the fourth day. However, Pakistan suffered an inexplicable collapse on the final day and conceded the match.

Pakistan started the day at 23-1 and were out for just 146 runs. Bangladesh, who had set a target of just 30 runs, managed to achieve it in 6.3 overs without losing a wicket. The latest result has put more pressure on the Pakistan team and the PCB.

Mohsin Naqvi himself is under pressure after the defeat against Bangladesh. However, the PCB chief has made it clear that he will not resign from his post and will continue to work hard to improve the situation. He admitted that even though people want him to resign, he will not do so.

“People want me to resign. I will not do so on anyone’s will. I will leave for the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” said Mohsin Naqvi.

I don’t have a magic wand: Mohsin Naqvi

Mohsin Naqvi also said that he could not change the situation overnight as he highlighted Pakistan’s struggle in home Tests. Pakistan have not won a home Test series since a 2-0 win over South Africa in 2021. In 2022, they lost the home series against Australia and England.

“I don’t have a magic wand to start producing results. Our performance in home tests has been the same for three years. When did we win the last test?” said Mohsin Naqvi.

Well, it won’t be entirely wrong to say that Naqvi is also running out of time to improve the situation.

Things have not changed much since he took over the reins of the PCB in February this year. Following his appointment, Pakistan drew the T20I series at home against a second-rate New Zealand side.

Later in May, they won the T20I series in Ireland but lost a match against them. This was followed by a series defeat in England before suffering a humiliating exit from the T20 World Cup.
