Avesh Khan, Shubman Gill

Indian National Cricket Team’s 27-year-old Avesh Khan, who has played 31 matches in ODIs and T20Is, has shared his strong opinion on the captaincy of Shubman Gill, with whom he is playing on India’s tour of Zimbabwe 2024 in the five-match T20I series.

Avesh Khan’s comments came after the conclusion of the third T20I between the Indian National Cricket Team led by Shubman Gill and the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team led by Sikandar Raza at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, July 10.

Once again, the young talents showed their dominance as India beat the Chevrons by 23 runs and took a 2-1 lead in the series. Batting first, they posted a total of 182/4 on the board, riding on Shubman Gill’s 66 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 48. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was playing his first match on the tour, also made a fine contribution of 36 runs with the bat and helped India’s cause.

In defence of the target, the Indian bowlers were again right as they got three early wickets. The Zimbabwe team was back in the hut in the fourth over and came under enormous pressure. Moreover, the dismissal of captain Sikandar Raza in the seventh over made things worse for them.

That’s when Dion Myers stepped up and played a brilliant knock. The batsman scored 65 runs off 49 balls to give India a big scare. However, lack of support from the others meant that he couldn’t get the job done.

For India, Washington Sundar was the pick for his figures of 3/15, while Avesh Khan (2/39) and Khaleel Ahmed (1/15) also made decent contributions.

Shubman is a bowler’s captain, he gives us the freedom to set up our fields and backs our plans – Avesh Khan

After the match, star fast bowler Avesh Khan expressed his happiness over his performance in the third T20I match against the Chevrons. Avesh Khan also said that he is always trying to create an impact for the team whenever he gets a chance and highlighted his readiness to bowl in every phase of the game.

Speaking about Shubman Gill’s captaincy, Avesh Khan stated that he is the captain of the bowlers as he gives them a lot of freedom and backs their plans. It is noteworthy that many also consider Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the captains of the bowlers, hence, Avesh’s praise will surely give Gill more confidence ahead of the upcoming match. Avesh Khan stated:

“I am happy with my performance, I always try to make an impact on the team. I have no preference on where to bowl, I am ready to bowl at any time. Shubman is a bowler’s captain, he gives us the freedom to set up our fields and backs our plans. He is responsible for me getting probably 1 or 2 wickets today.”

Ravi Bishnoi, who is considered one of the best fielders in the present day, was dealt an absolutely blinding blow by dismissing Brian Bennett in the third T20I. Speaking about this, Avesh Khan said that the leg-spinner always produces such catches. The right-arm bowler said:

“(On Bishnoi) He is a good fielder, he always catches balls like this, you would have seen it in the IPL as well. He always wants to take extraordinary catches.”
