Fans on Twitter reacted after India began their Super 8 leg of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on a high note. They defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, in a Group 1 encounter on Thursday (June 20).
Opting to bat, India did not get off to the kind of start they would have liked as captain Rohit Sharna (8) fell early. Rishabh Pant (20), who came in at three, made a brutal cameo but couldn’t continue. He, along with Virat Kohli (24), added 43 runs but both the batsmen lost their wickets within a span of two overs.
India reeled at 62 for three and it was at that point that Suryakumar Yadav (53) took center stage. Hardik Pandya (32) supported him well as the duo got India out of trouble and made sure to take the team to a good total.
Axar Patel scored 12 quick runs in the end to take India to 181/8 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. For Afghanistan, Rashid Khan was the pick of the players with his figures of three for 26.
In the chase, Afghanistan got off to the worst possible start with the bat. Jasprit Bumrah removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11) and Hazratullah Zazai (2) early. Then Axar Patel also contributed and removed Ibrahim Zadran (8) as the batting team lost three wickets for just 23 runs.
Gulbadin Naib (17) and Azmatullah Omarzai (26) tried to link the partnership but could not as the Indian bowlers contributed wickets at regular intervals and left the opposition reeling at 114/7. They bundled the Rashid Khan-led team with 134 runs to win the game by 47 runs. Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets and gave away just seven runs. Arshdeep Singh also picked up three scalps, while Kuldeep Yadav bagged two scalps.
