Jonty Rhodes slams Rohit Sharma’s ‘naughty’ comments on the mic

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes made an interesting comment about Team India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma. Jonty Rhodes highlighted that Rohit Sharma has always had a “mischievous” side to his personality and added that he often makes humorous comments on the field.

Rohit Sharma has always been known for his funny banter with his teammates and journalists during press conferences. This side of his personality has become more noticeable since he became the captain. Rohit’s humorous comments have been caught on hidden microphones several times.

The 37-year-old batsman was last seen in action during the ODI series against Sri Lanka last month. He will not be taking part in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024, where many players on central contracts will compete. Rohit is next scheduled to be seen in action during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

Rohit Sharma is quite a naughty boy – Jonty Rhodes

Jonty Rhodes worked with Rohit at Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rhodes mentioned that he does not fully understand Rohit’s obscene comments.

“The way he interacts with his teammates, he’s quite a character. He’s almost quite a mischievous kid. He’ll say some things on the microphone and you’re like, ‘Oh! You know people are listening, Ro?’ I don’t understand it all, but it always comes across and translates for us,” Rhodes told Rev Sports.

Rohit Sharma grew up as a captain at Mumbai Indians – Jonty Rhodes

The former South African cricketer praised Rohit Sharma for his rapport with the younger players and described him as an older brother-like figure. Rhodes highlighted that Rohit’s captaincy has been outstanding and added that he has grown as a leader with the Mumbai Indians.

“From a captaincy point of view, he’s been great. I was with him at MI for a number of seasons. He grew up as a captain there and that’s the best thing about him,” Rhodes said.

You are easily discovered internationally – Jonty Rhodes

Jonty Rhodes also highlighted how Rohit Sharma has adapted his white-ball game to remain effective. He added that opponents are quick to spot weaknesses. Rhodes shared his own experience of being ruled out of Test cricket due to technical issues.

“Cricketers have to constantly reinvent themselves. At the international level you get spotted easily. I was ruled out of Test cricket for two years because I had a technical problem. If you look at Rohit, so much cricket has been played that if you don’t evolve, you will remain stagnant. People will spot you,” he added.

Rhodes is considered one of the greatest in the history of cricket. The former cricketer played for South Africa from 1992 to 2003, taking part in 52 Test matches and 245 ODIs. Rhodes scored 2532 runs in Test cricket and 5935 runs in ODIs. He scored three centuries in Test cricket and two in ODI matches.
