‘Just brain fades’: Fans left clueless after night watchman Mohammed Siraj takes DRS to get lbw plumb

The replays only confirmed that the on-field referee’s decision was correct.

India pacer Mohammed Siraj, who came out to bat as a night watchman near the end of Day 1 play in the ongoing third Test of IND vs NZ, had a brain-fading moment where he took an unnecessary DRS and wasted a indian review.

After the Indian bowlers bowled the Kiwis for 235, the hosts suffered an early setback losing captain Rohit Sharma for just 18 runs in the seventh over. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were expected to close the batting at the stumps, Jaiswal fell victim to an audacious reverse sweep with Ajaz Patel’s delivery hitting the woodwork.

It was then that Siraj came out to bat in place of number 4 Virat Kohli, with the scoreboard reading 78 for 2 and a couple more overs remaining. However, the Indian pacer fell victim to the next ball, and was caught lbw by the New Zealand spinner.

Even though it looked like a plumb line, Siraj decided to go upstairs without much resistance from Shubman Gill, who was on the non-striker’s side and had a clear view of the delivery. The replays only confirmed that the on-field referee’s decision was correct.

The Indian team has already lost the series, losing 2-0, and will be looking for a win in Mumbai to avoid an outright victory.
