With Rohit Sharma set to return for the second Test, there has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding KL Rahul’s batting position. Naturally, Rohit is an opener and has had great success at the top, but in his absence, Rahul opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Perth Test.
He outdid himself at the top, scoring 26 and 77 in difficult conditions and was among the most comfortable batsmen in the first innings when the ball moved significantly. Therefore, the team would want him to continue opening the innings but they are facing a big dilemma with Rohit’s return.
With less than two days left for the second Test, KL Rahul attended the press conference and answered several questions; when asked about his batting position, he did not reveal it. He exclaimed that they had asked him to keep it a secret and that they would know his place until the captain revealed it or the match started.
“I have been told [about my position]but they have also told me not to share it. You will have to wait for the first day or perhaps for the captain to arrive tomorrow.”
Rohit Sharma batted at number 4 in the warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI
While nothing conclusive can be drawn from the warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI, Rohit Sharma batted in the middle order, at No. 4. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to open, which gives a hint of what to expect.
According to ESPNcricinfo, even during the practice session, Rahul paired up with Jaiswal to start the drill, followed by Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli before Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant got a chance. If this is anything to go by, expect Rohit to be ranked No. 5 in the Day-Night match, even though it was just a net session.

Both Rohit and KL have previous experience in both roles in Test cricket. Both of them earlier opened the innings and batted in the middle order for India.
Eventually, it will come down to who handles the new pink ball best, because that’s where the game will be decided. They both have enough skill to hit in any position and achieve it.
