Kumar Dharmasena under scrutiny for signaling with the hand, helps England not waste the review in ENG vs Ind 5th Test

Officing the ENG vs Ind 5th test in the Oval, the referee of Sri Lanka, Kumar Dharmasena, was under the radar on day 1 after it was apparently seen pointing with his hand that helped the hosts not to waste a review.

What had happened was that Josh Tongue hit Sai Sudharsan in the pads that led to an appeal of the Cricktic players in England. However, Dharmasena rejected him, but at the time he was shaking his head, he was caught pointing with his fingers that there was an inner edge that prevented England from challenging the decision and opting for a DRS. Soon, the repetitions also confirmed Dharmasena’s feeling that the ball hit the bat and, subsequently, England’s decision not to opt for a review turned out well.

The referee’s signal in the field stirred a great debate among fans and experts about whether the referees can give such signals to the players before taking a review.

What do the rules say?

While there is no rule that specifies that the referees cannot transmit the reason why their decision is, with the DR available, makes such calls difficult.

According to article 32.2.3 of the Game conditions of the CPI test test, he says: “Or the captain or the two batters can, with respect to a decision related to an appeal for LBW, question the referee of the Bowler End if his decision has been made on the basis that the striker did not make any genuine attempt to play the ball with the bat.

“In no other circumstance, no player is allowed to consult a referee about any aspect of a decision before deciding whether or not to request a review of a player. If the referees in the field believe that the captain or the batter have received direct or indirect contributions that emanate another part of the players in the field, then they can decline the request of a review of a player.”
