Former England Cricketer Mark Butcher has weighed in on Joe Root’s poor form in the ongoing Test series against India. He said the batsman is having trouble with the bat because he has increased his workload with the ball.
Joe Root’s form with the bat has been one of the biggest concerns for the England team in the ongoing Test series against India. He has failed drastically with the bat and is one of the reasons why the visitors are 2-1 down in the series after three games of the series.
Going into the series, a lot was expected of Joe Root because he has been arguably the best Test batsman England has ever produced. The right-hander in the ongoing series is averaging 12.83 in the three games so far. But it’s fair to say that he himself is to blame for his low scores.
Joe Root came out while playing attacking cricket. He went unnoticed after his dismissal in the third test. The right-hander tried a reverse delivery to Jasprit Bumrah and he got caught in the slips. The pacer has eliminated him 9 times in his career.
This caused Joe Root to receive a lot of criticism for the way they did it. There were even suggestions that he should play the old fashioned way and not try Bazball. But the batsman has the support of the team management and they are hopeful that he will do well.
Mark Butcher feels that England’s use of a frontrower is not yielding results for his batting. As quoted by Wisden, the former England cricketer stated:
“I think having to work so hard as a frontline pitcher probably isn’t going to produce the kind of results you’d expect from him with the bat.”
Joe Root has contributed more with the ball than the bat in the ongoing series. With Jack Leach ruled out of the series, captain Ben Stokes has used the batsman as the team’s main bowler. He too has done a decent job and has also picked crucial wickets for the team.

Mark Butcher further pointed out why India were favorites to win even before the game began. He highlighted his inexperienced spin attack with Joe Root as the part-time bowler. He added:
“Given the pitches that occur when you bowl first and third instead of second quarter, you need a little more than guys who are just making their way through the game or guys who are, as Joe Root is, bowlers at part time. to defend the fort for you. “It is a big reason why India were favorites before we started.”
