Mohammad Rizwan beats Rishabh Pant to become world number one wicketkeeper at this level

Mohammad Rizwan’s valiant effort with the bat went in vain as Pakistan suffered a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the recently concluded Rawalpindi Test.

The wicket-keeper batsman top-scored for his side in both innings but his efforts were not enough for Pakistan to avoid their first ever Test defeat against Bangladesh. In the first innings, the right-handed batsman scored a brilliant century which helped Pakistan recover from a poor start and post a big total.

Asked to bat first, Pakistan were trailing 16 for 3 and then 114 for 4 before Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan scored tons of brilliant points to get their team out of trouble. While Shakeel was out for 141 runs, his partner remained unbeaten on 171 runs as Pakistan declared their innings at 448/6.

In reply, a stunning 191-run knock from veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim helped Bangladesh pile on 565 runs to take a huge lead of 117 runs. On the fifth day of the Test, Pakistan suffered an inexplicable collapse and were bowled out for just 146 runs after starting the day at 23 for 1. Mohammad Rizwan also impressed with the bat in the second innings as he scored 51 runs.

Bangladesh set a target of 30 runs and managed to reach the total in less than 7 overs without losing a wicket to record a historic win. Prior to this win, Bangladesh had faced Pakistan in 13 Tests and had lost 12 of them while drawing one.

Mohammad Rizwan breaks Rishabh Pant’s record:

Mohammad Rizwan has smashed the record of his Indian counterpart Rishabh Pant after shining with the bat in both innings against Bangladesh. He now holds the record for a wicketkeeper who has scored the most runs in a World Test Championship match.

The Pakistan star scored 222 runs in the Rawalpindi Test. The record was previously held by Rishabh Pant, who had scored 203 runs in the 2023 Edgbaston Test against England. Pant had scored 146 runs in the first innings before scoring 57 runs in the second. However, like Rizwan, Pant had also failed to lead India to victory or even a draw.

Rizwan also broke the 44-year-old record of wicket-keeper batsmen scoring the most runs in a Test match for Pakistan. The record was previously held by Taslim Arif, who scored 210 runs against Australia in the 1980 Faisalabad Test.
