Mohammed Shami gives update on return to international cricket

Following India’s loss against New Zealand yesterday, Shami was seen bowling on the main track in an intense session in Bengaluru.

Mohammed Shami has given a great update on his fitness and his path to return to international cricket. He has not played for India since the 2023 World Cup final due to an ankle injury, for which he underwent surgery in February this year.

Following India’s loss against New Zealand yesterday, Shami was seen bowling on the main track in an intense session in Bengaluru. He bowled for an extended period at full speed and took part in the fielding drill mid-session, showing no signs of pain or regression.

In a new development, Shami revealed that he is happy with his progress and gave his 100% in yesterday’s session. At a Eugenix Hair Sciences event, the Indian sprinter confirmed that he is pain-free after reports of a swollen knee emerged a few weeks ago.

“I am very happy with how I bowled yesterday. Before that, I used half throttle to manage the load. But yesterday I tried my best and gave 100 percent. The result was good. I am now completely pain free. There has been a lot of talk about whether I will make it to the Australia series, but there is still time. My focus is on my fitness and how strong I can be for the Australia series. “I understand the type of bowling attack we will need there and I need more time on the field.”

Mohammed Shami: India’s crucial weapon in Australia

India’s concerns over Mohammed Shami’s fitness are understandable as he is an ideal weapon for Australia’s tracks. Its length suits Australian conditions and has been successful there.

He has 31 wickets at an average of 32.16 and a strike rate of 54.22 in 15 outings in Australia, including two five-wicket hauls. His previous experience playing there will be more than useful for the Indian team as Shami has toured Australia three times in his Test career.

Mohammed Siraj’s recent form has dipped, so the onus has fallen heavily on Jasprit Bumrah. India cannot afford to go with just one sprinter to Australia, where pacers naturally get more assistance.

Therefore, Shami’s recovery is mandatory if India wants to achieve a hat-trick of wins in that part of the world. Not only is he fit, but India will also need him to be in the red-ball rhythm from the first match of the qualifier, so they would want him to play for their national team before catching the plane to Australia.
